The objectives of the Policy are to:

  • Demonstrate commitment to maintaining a harassment-free environment
  • Educate the community about harassment and discrimination
  • Take immediate action when harassment occurs
  • Provide remedies for those who have been harassed
  • Identify the roles and responsibilities of all community members
  • Provide clear procedures for reporting and responding to harassment

Discrimination

Discrimination is any action or decision that treats a person or group unfairly based on characteristics such as race, ancestry, place of origin, color, ethnic origin, citizenship, creed, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, age, marital status, family status, disability, or receipt of public assistance, as set out in the Ontario Human Rights Code. Discrimination can have an adverse effect on a person's opportunities, treatment, or access to services.

Harassment

Harassment is a form of discrimination. It is unwelcome conduct that is based on a protected ground under the Ontario Human Rights Code. Harassment can be physical, verbal, written, or visual. A single act can constitute harassment if it is severe enough.

Types of behaviour which constitute harassment include, but are not limited to:

  • Jokes about physical characteristics, race, religion, or sexual orientation
  • Teasing or taunting
  • Displaying derogatory materials
  • Intimidation or threats
  • Leering or inappropriate staring
  • Inquiries about sex life
  • Practical jokes that are offensive
  • Hazing or initiation rituals
  • Derogatory nicknames
  • Unwelcome physical or sexual contact

Bullying

Bullying is aggressive and typically repeated behavior by a pupil where:

  • (a) The behavior is intended to cause harm (physical, psychological, social, academic, reputation, property) or create a negative school environment.
  • (b) The behavior occurs in a context of real or perceived power imbalance based on factors like size, strength, age, intelligence, social status, religion, race, disability, etc.

This behavior includes physical, verbal, electronic, written, or other means, with specific examples of cyberbullying (creating fake web pages, impersonating others, posting material electronically).

Queensgate International School recognizes that bullying adversely affects learning, relationships, school climate, and will not be accepted on school property or related activities.

What Can You Do?

If you are a victim, know a victim, or witness discrimination, harassment, or bullying:

  • Tell the person to stop if you feel safe doing so
  • Write down details of the incident (date, time, location, what happened, who was involved)
  • Talk with a staff member (for students)
  • Report incidents to Canadian Independent College staff
  • All reports are taken seriously and will be investigated

Importance of Respect

Queensgate International School is committed to maintaining a respectful, dignified, and equitable learning environment. We encourage all members of our community to report incidents of discrimination, harassment, or bullying so we can work together to create a safe and supportive environment for everyone.
